What is your take on horseshoes? I know some people who do not get shoes for their horses, and I was surprised. Are they necessary? Is it harmful not to have them?

Amy Mahoney-

Horseshoes are not always necessary, although they are in certain cases. Horses that would need shoes: have laminitis, sensitive feet, narvicular disease and other ailments. Your farrier would be the one to tell you if the horse needs shoes. Sometimes horses have shoes put on when the horse's feet come in bad condition, to correct future problems. I do not mind horses having shoes only if they need them. The people like me who do not put shoes on their horses have horses with nice solid feet. Cracks are another reason to put shoes on. If the horse has a cracked hoof a shoe can help make it so the foot does not crack anymore than what it is. Horseshoes are not harmful unless: they are put on wrong or kept on too long where the feet have not been trimmed in a long time. An alternative to shoes are hoof boots. The hoof boots are used when horses travel on gravel/rocks for a long period of time. There are a lot of different shoes and boot brands but I recommenced shopping around and heard that the Renegade boots are the best boots.Thank you and happy shopping/researching.
